What’s YSBC@CUHK?

CUHK invited Nobel Peace Laureate – Professor Muhammad Yunus to speak at the I.CARE University Lecture series in October 2015. The lecture inspired audience with the innovative possibilities of social business as a solution to poverty. CUHK took the lead to pursue the vision in Hong Kong.

Yunus Social Business Centre@CUHK (YSBC@CUHK), has obtained permission from Prof. Muhammad Yunus to name the Centre after him and to leverage on his enormous experience, expertise, insights and reputation for the purpose of educating young people in Hong Kong for alleviation of poverty through social business. The Centre believes that young people are the hope of society. They are the main catalysts to motivate social advancement. They are the important partners in the eradication of poverty.

YSBC@CUHK is under the Steering Committee for Promoting Personal Development through Social and Civic Engagement of Chinese University of Hong Kong. And it cooperates with the I.CARE Programme to provide a range of major categories of social and civic engagement programmes.

With CUHK providing overall direction and support, this experiential and pilot learning provided by YSBC would extend the duration of learning of students after their graduation until the social business projects become self-sustaining. The success of this experiment would mark a significant step forward in Hong Kong young people’s role in sustainable poverty alleviation.
